Mediocrity Pays Well

May 29, 2008

Two bowl losses in consecutive years, zero ACC Championships and a 69-42 record over the last nine seasons has landed Clemson head football coach Tommy Bowden with a new contract worth a reported $1.8 million a year.

Where can I sign up for that gig?

This signing defies logic but I guess it speaks to how low the expectations are in Death Valley. Instead of wanting to compete with Boston College, Virginia Tech, Miami and Florida State and are happy to be a second-rate ACC power and so they’ll pay Bowden, a coach that hasn’t recruited particularly well and has no ACC Championships or BCS appearances despite lofty expectations at the beginning of each season.

Clemson will continue to rank among the likes of Maryland, Wake Forest and Virginia until they make a move and hire a head coach that can breathe some life into the program.
